Assignment 7
The Elizabethan time period was filled with supersitions and beliefs in ghost. When Shakespeare lived in London, he was surrounded violence and these images were reflected into his plays. Ghosts were always recognized, and if someone did not believe in ghost, they were considered foolish, and sometimes uneducated. Elizabethans recognized ghosts in three different genres: the vision of a ghost, the ghost who has died without the opportunity of repentance, and the false ghost which is capable of many types of harm. Critics do not agree on which type ghost is present in Hamlet and often they cannot see the importantance of Old Hamlet’s ghost in the play. Despite these critisms, Shakespeare’s plays were, and still are, tremendously popular.
It is evident that many of supersitions and ghost beliefs have changed in today’s world. Personally, I do not believe in ghosts, but I acknowledge that others do. It is not uncommon to see television shows for “Ghost Hunters” and horror movies filled with ghost and other spirts. Thousands of internet sites offer tips on locating ghost and give information on how to ‘distrub’ the ghost. Many people are extremely facinated with ghost because they seem to get a thrill from getting scared.
