Assignment 10
This video tells the story of a young girl and it appears that she lives in modern day Asia. It is obvious that she is deaf and that she is bullied by her peers. Although she gives up hope on playing the violin, an older man (the one playing the violin on the street), who is possibly deaf, helps her regain her self confidence. The climax of the story occurs as we see her appear on stage with her shattered violin. Even though this young girl struggles on the outside, it also forces her to struggle with herself. The irony in this story is that the young girl amazed the audience at the competition and probably got higher scores than the other girl who was so mean to her. This entire story represents that if you belive in yourself, anything is possible.
Assignment 9
Hamlet begins with despair in Denmark. Old King Hamlet has died and his brother, Claudius, has taken the throne. Soon after becoming King, Claudius marries his former sister in law, Gertrude. Young Hamlet, Old Hamlet’s son, is in a state of mourning for the death of his father and he is furious with his mother for marrying so quickly after the death of his father and her husband. Hamlet soon sees the ghost of his father and Old Hamlet tells his son how he was murdered by Claudius and how he wants Hamlet to take revenge. Hamlet begins to act insane after seeing his father’s ghost. Hamlet is viciously rude to Ophelia, but after her drowning, he realizes his love for her. Hamlet kills Polonious (Claudius’ advisor), Rosencratz and Guildenstern (school friends who were sent by the King to spy on Hamlet), Laertes ( Polonious’ son), and Claudius. Hamlet’s mother drinks wine poisoned by Claudius and dies near the end of the play. Hamlet is cut by a poisoned sword and also dies. Young Fortinbras had a distant relation to the throne of Denmark and became King.
Assignment 6
Many scholars have interpreted The Wizard of Oz as an economic allegory for the events of America in the 1890′s. Some of these scholars believe that the creators of The Wizard of Oz, L. Frank Baum and D.W. Denslow, did not actually invent the characters in this famous story. This is believed because many of these main characters such as the Tin Man and the Lion were commonly used in political cartoons during the time period that this story was written. It is also commonly believed that Baum and Denslow took this characters and added Dorothy to create the story. Positive thinking was a common phase of the time and this was incorporated by Dorothy finding her way back to Kansas. Dorothy is believed to stand for President Theodore Roosevelt (the syllables Dor-o-thy are the reverse syllables for The-o-dore) or the American people. During this time period, Kansas was know for hardships and and destructive tornadoes, just as today. The Tin Man is an industrial worker, the Scarecrow is a farmer, and the Munchkins are symbolic of American citizens. This is just one of the many interpretations of this widely known and well enjoyed story.
Assisgnment 5
In today’s world, we as human beings are faced daily with the ideals of the perfect life. Each time we turn on the television we see the latest exercise program, beauty products, and even families. Looking through magizines, we see advertisements on ‘How to get rich fast’ or ‘How to loose that extra ten pounds’. In that fashionable boutique in the mall they don’t carry sizes past large and on the runway we see models that only weigh about one hundred pounds. These images do not see out of the ordinary anymore and they unknowingly force each of us to try to fit into those seemingly perfect standards. In the process to become perfect, it can damage both our physical and emotional state. Young girls want to look like models so they skip meals and exercise excessively. Adults drive themselves into debt to buy the perfect clothes, the newest car, and the biggest house. In reality, however, we are far from perfect. We do not have the perfect bodies that live with our perfect families in the perfect neighborhood with the white picket fence, no matter how hard we try.

This is my first blog. Unlike most of the people I know I don’t have a facebook or a myspace. This blog is for a class assignment and I think it is unusual, but still a good idea. I’m skeptical about the blogs but I’m willing to give it a try.
